A Mother Blessing is a ceremony offered to expectant mothers as a way of honoring the passage into Motherhood. Unlike a traditional baby shower, where gifts are purchased for the baby, a Mother Blessing is all about nurturing the mother-to-be and celebrating motherhood.
A Mother Blessing involves a gathering of the mother-to-be’s most trusted friends and family. Traditionally it is a woman-only gathering and may include anyone she respects, looks up to or values. The Mother blessing helps the woman to prepare herself for the birth, emotionally, spiritually and mentally, for the all important role of a new mother. It is a way to create community and help the mother to be feel ‘held’ and supported by those she loves and respects and to allow her to embrace what’s to come. A Mother Blessing can be very affirming, empowering and uplifting. It doesn’t matter what religion (if any) the mother practices, a Mother Blessing honours all belief systems.
A mother blessing is unique to each woman. Some ideas on what is included in a mother blessing include:
Bead Ceremony Women invited to the mother blessing bring or sent in a bead and a note. This gift is given to the expectant mother and is created into a necklace the mother can wear during labor, birth, and postpartum. Creating the necklace creates a physical reminder of the presence of the women who have offered their blessings and beads. Many mothers wear their beads during labor and in the early days postpartum.
Cord Ceremony Binding everyone’s wrists with a single cord of red wool and naming the women in our motherline is a way of honoring the mothers before us, connecting us to the past and present, and remind us of the strength of our bodies and blood mysteries. Women wear the string around their wrists until they hear the baby is born as a way to remind others to be thinking of the mother to be in the weeks leading up to birth.
Flowers and/or Henna A crown of flowers made for the mother as a way to symbolically crown and honor her.
Massage Head, shoulder, hand and foot massage to make the mother feel nurtured, relaxed, protected, surrounded by love, and supported.
Mothering the mother – brushing her hair, washing her feet in warm water or painting her toenails is a lovely way to nurture her.
