World Walk for Breastfeeding Update

The World Walk for breastfeeding is La Leche League of Nantucket’s annual family friendly event held on Nantucket to welcome families together and get the word out about the free work we do on the island. The walk is a world wide event with events being held in over 65 countries. This year the goal of the international walk is to “highlight Breastfeeding Peer Counselling. Even when mothers are able to get off to a good start, all too often in the weeks or months after delivery there is a sharp decline in breastfeeding rates, and practices, particularly exclusive breastfeeding. The period when mothers do not visit a healthcare  is the time when a community support system for mothers is essential. Continued support to sustain breastfeeding can be provided in a variety of ways. Traditionally, support is provided by the family. As societies change, however, in particular with urbanization, support for mothers from a wider circle is needed, whether it is provided by trained health workers, lactation consultants, community leaders, or from friends who are also mothers, and/or from fathers/partners. “http://worldbreastfeedingweek.org/

This year we have already started to ask area doctors and are businesses for their support. I am so happy to report that Nantucket Kid (www.NantucketKid.com) and The Muse have stepped up and generously donated to our local La Leche League group. I am so grateful for their support which will allow our group to update the lending library, pay expenses for our leader applicants to travel for conference, and help to pay our group dues to La Leche League International. Please take the time to support these businesses and thank them for their donation. Their gifts assure that our group is here for the next group of island natives.

If you would like to donate to La Leche League, please mail a check made out to La Leche League of Nantucket to 2 Greglen Ave #244 Nantucket MA 02554. All donations are tax deductible. All proceeds stay here on island and support the work we do locally. Thank you!
